PDF to Text

Extract selectable text from a PDF for copying, search, or analysis.

About PDF to Text

When you need the words out of a PDF - to quote, search, translate, or analyze them - PDF to Text extracts the document's text layer into plain, editable text.

Upload the PDF and download or copy the extracted text. The tool reads the embedded text of digitally created PDFs accurately. Note that scanned pages are images of text and contain no text layer, so they will not extract unless they were already processed with OCR.

It is useful for pulling a quote from a report, feeding document text into a script, checking content quickly, or repurposing copy without retyping. Formatting such as columns and tables may not survive perfectly, since plain text has no layout.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my scanned PDF return no text?

Scans are images; without OCR there is no text layer to extract.

Will the layout be preserved?

Plain text keeps the words but not columns, tables, or styling.

Can I extract text from specific pages?

Extract the document text, or split the PDF first to target certain pages.

Does it work with multi-column PDFs?

Text is extracted, though the column order may not always be perfect.

Is my document kept?

No, uploads are processed over HTTPS and removed automatically soon after.
